Simona Halep (born September 27, 1991 in Constanța ) is a Romanian tennis player . Her greatest successes so far are titles at the French Open 2018 and Wimbledon 2019 . Between October 2017 and January 2019 she was number 1 in the world rankings for a total of 64 weeks .

Life

Halep's father was a football player for FC Farul Constanța club . Her brother already played tennis and was accompanied to training by Simona and her parents. There on the tennis court, Simona grabbed the racket, the tennis coach noticed her and trained her afterwards. In addition, she played soccer and handball in school in her childhood.

Her great role model is the football player and current football coach Gheorghe Hagi , who also comes from Constanța and, like the Halep family, belongs to the Aromanian people in Romania.

Career

Simona Halep started playing tennis at the age of four. She initially preferred clay courts as she had better results on clay at the beginning of her career; now she prefers to play on the hard court . She has been part of the Romanian Fed Cup team since 2010 . She has won 16 of her 25 Fed Cup games to date.

2008 to 2012: the beginnings

2008 title win at the French Open for Juniors

In June 2008 she won the junior women’s tournament of the French Open with a final victory over her compatriot Elena Bogdan (6: 4, 6: 7 3 , 6: 2).

Because Halep suffered from back pain and felt physically impaired while playing tennis, she underwent an operation in the summer of 2009 that reduced her breasts from bra size 80E to 80B. Media reports that were more about their bust size than their sporting career were no reason for the intervention.

At the WTA tournament in Fez , she reached the final in 2010, which she lost to Iveta Benešová 4-6, 2-6. At the French Open , she qualified for the first time for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament . In round one she lost to the later finalist Samantha Stosur 5: 7 and 1: 6.

At the Australian Open she reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2011, when she defeated the seeded Alissa Kleibanova 6: 4, 7: 6 2 in round two . She lost her third round game against Agnieszka Radwańska in straight sets.

Because of an abdominal muscle strain, there were no further successes for the time being. However , she was able to confirm her participation in the final in Fès in 2010 . After victories over Nastassja Jakimawa and Gréta Arn, among others, she lost to Alberta Brianti 4-6 and 3-6 in the final .

At Wimbledon , she impressed in her second round match against long-time world number one Serena Williams , against whom she was eliminated 6: 3, 2: 6, 1: 6.

On the US hard court tour, she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets as a qualifier at the Rogers Cup in Toronto ; it was her first win over a top 20 player. In round two she was eliminated against Lucie Šafářová with 2: 6, 4: 6; nevertheless she made it into the top 50 of the world rankings.

At the US Open , despite ankle problems against Li Na , she celebrated her first win (6: 2, 7: 5) against a top ten player. In round two she had to admit defeat Carla Suárez 6: 3, 2: 6, 2: 6 after several injury breaks . In the 2011 season she improved by almost 40 world rankings to 47th.

2013–2016: WTA title, top ten and first Grand Slam final

2014 in Madrid

On June 15, 2013 Halep won her first individual title on the WTA Tour in Nuremberg . In the final she defeated Andrea Petković 6: 3 and 6: 3. A week later she also won the Topshelf Open in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands . Within a month the WTA tournament in Budapest followed singles title number three, and only six weeks later she landed the fourth title win at the hard court tournament in New Haven ; in the semi-finals she defeated the world number eight Caroline Wozniacki 6: 2, 7: 5 and in the final Petra Kvitová (WTA 9) in two straight sets.

At the US Open , she reached the round of 16 for the first time in her career, in which she was defeated by Flavia Pennetta in two sets. Eight weeks after New Haven, she won another WTA tournament when she defeated Samantha Stosur in straight sets in the Moscow final. Only two weeks later she won the WTA Tournament of Champions in Sofia with another final victory over Stosur . With her sixth title win in just four and a half months, Halep improved to number 11 in the world rankings.

In Melbourne in 2014 she was in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time after a straight two-set win over Jelena Janković , which she lost to the later finalist Dominika Cibulková with 3: 6, 0: 6. In Doha , after Kaia Kanepi and Annika Beck, she also defeated the three top ten players Sara Errani , Agnieszka Radwańska and Angelique Kerber in two sets. She won her seventh WTA title within eight months and reached position 5 in the world rankings on March 17, 2014. On May 11, she was in Madrid again in the final of a WTA tournament, which she lost in three sets against Maria Sharapova .

At the French Open , she reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career, which she lost to Sharapova 4: 6, 7: 6, 5 , 4: 6. At Wimbledon she reached the semifinals, in which she was defeated by Eugenie Bouchard 6: 7, 5 , 2: 6. On August 11, 2014, Halep was the new number 2 in the world. Her good season was rewarded with her first participation in the WTA Championships . She got there to the final, which she lost to Serena Williams 3: 6 and 0: 6.

At the hard court tournament in Shenzhen in 2015 she was again in the final, which she won against Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 and 6-2. In Melbourne she played her way to the quarter-finals, in which she surprisingly failed to Yekaterina Makarova . After tournament victories in Dubai and Indian Wells as well as semi-finals in Miami, Stuttgart and Rome, the French Open ended in round two against Mirjana Lučić-Baroni . At Wimbledon she even suffered a first round defeat against Jana Čepelová .

With the dangers posed by the Zika virus , Halep justified her decision not to participate in the Olympic Games in Rio .

Since 2017: World number one and first Grand Slam title

Halep at Wimbledon 2017

In 2017 Halep reached the final of the French Open for the second time in her career , which she lost to Jeļena Ostapenko . As a result, she also missed the jump to number 1 in the world rankings . She missed other opportunities that year at Wimbledon and Cincinnati . After beating Marija Sharapova at the China Open in September 2017 and Jeļena Ostapenko in the semifinals, she managed to take the lead in the world rankings.

At the beginning of 2018, Halep won both singles and doubles with her compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu in Shenzhen . This was her first double win at a WTA tournament. At the following Australian Open , she was almost eliminated in the third round against Lauren Davis . In the third-longest women's individual in tournament history, she won 4: 6, 6: 4, 15:13 against the unseeded American in 3:45 hours and both set a new Australian Open record with a total of 48 games. After further victories over Naomi Ōsaka , Karolína Plíšková and an equally exhausting three-set win against Angelique Kerber , she met Caroline Wozniacki in her third Grand Slam final . After 2:49 hours she was defeated by the Dane, who was in second place on the seeding list, 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 3, 4: 6. With this success, Halep von Wozniacki was also replaced from the top of the world rankings . On February 26, 2018, Halep took over the leadership of the world rankings again.

At the following French Open , Halep reached the individual finals for the third time after victories over Elise Mertens , Angelique Kerber and the former tournament winner Garbiñe Muguruza . There she defeated the number ten seeded Sloane Stephens in three sets (3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1) and won her first Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon , she was eliminated in the third round in three sets against Hsieh Su-wei after Halep had previously had a match point. At the Rogers Cup in Montreal she won her third title of the season, in the final Halep Sloane defeated Stephens 7: 6, 3: 6, 6: 4. At the subsequent tournament in Cincinnati , she also made it into the final, but lost it in three sets against Kiki Bertens . At the two final premier tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing , she lost the first match. After that, Halep canceled her start at the WTA Championships due to persistent back problems, but she ended the year as first in the world for the second time in a row. In November, Halep and her trainer Darren Cahill announced their split after working together for four years, as Cahill wanted to take more time with his family.

After a previously unsuccessful season, she won her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2019 . In the final, she clearly won 6-2 and 6-2 against Serena Williams .
