The WTA Championships in 2019 were in the tournament calendar of the ladies after the four Grand Slam tournaments with the highest prize for points and prize money tennis tournament . The hard court tournament of the WTA Tour 2019 was held from October 27 to November 3, 2019 in Shenzhen Bay Sports Center in the People's Republic of China instead.

The defending champions were Elina Switolina in singles and Kristina Mladenovic and Tímea Babos in doubles. While the doubles were able to defend their title, Switolina lost in the final against Ashleigh Barty , who secured the top position on the WTA world rankings with the victory.

The total prize money was 14 million US dollars. In doubles, the prize money mentioned was paid out per team.

Competition mode

In the round of the tournament four players each played in two groups, each against each other (round robin) . The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, which were played in a knockout system . The winner of each group played against the second in the other group and the winners of those games played the final.

Naomi Osaka had to retire after her first match due to an injury. As a substitute player, Kiki Bertens came on for the remaining two round robin games. Bianca Andreescu also had to retire after an injury, which is why Sofia Kenin took her place for a game in the round robin phase.
