Barbora Krejčíková (born December 18, 1995 in Brno ) is a Czech tennis player and former world number one in women's doubles. Her greatest successes were the victory at the French Open 2021 in singles and the triumph in the doubles competitions at the French Open ( 2018 , 2021 ) and in Wimbledon ( 2018 ), both together with Kateřina Siniaková . From 2019 to 2021 she won the mixed competition at the Australian Open three times in a row .
Career
Krejčíková, who started tennis at the age of six, already enjoyed great success as a junior. The former number three in the junior world rankings won the junior doubles competitions at the French Open , the US Open and Wimbledon in 2013 together with her compatriot Kateřina Siniaková . Furthermore, the two triumphed in the same year at the European Junior Tennis Championships , in which Krejčíková also won the individual title.
In 2010 she made her debut at the ITF Women's Circuit , where she has already won 14 singles and 19 doubles titles. After initial successes on the ITF Tour, Krejčíková entered the US Open for the first time in qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament in 2014 , but lost there in the final round. Subsequently, she qualified for the first time in Québec for the main draw of a WTA tournament and after an opening success against Sachia Vickery immediately moved into the second round, in which she failed to Lucie Hradecká . In 2015 she won her biggest single title to date at a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Olomouc . Towards the end of the season, Krejčíková, again in Québec , succeeded together with An-Sophie Mestach after a victory in the final over María Irigoyen and Paula Kania, their first WTA title in doubles, on the one in Limoges at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series alongside Mandy Minella should be followed by a second.
At the beginning of 2016 she teamed up with her former junior partner Kateřina Siniaková and from then on specialized in women's doubles. At the French Open , the two achieved their first Grand Slam semi-final, in which they first had to admit defeat to Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina . After another quarter-finals at the US Open , Krejčíková closed the season for the first time under the top 30 of the double world rankings. In the following year she first drew attention to herself in the individual, when she advanced from qualification to her first individual final on the WTA tour at the clay court tournament in Nuremberg , in which she was defeated by Kiki Bertens without a chance. However, Krejčíková did not manage to build on the performance shown in the singles, so in 2018 she concentrated more on doubles again without ever completely resting her solo career. After a one-year break, Krejčíková started the season again in doubles with Kateřina Siniaková. After they left the field as losers in Miami , she won her first Grand Slam title at the side of her compatriot at the French Open after a smooth final victory over Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya , followed by the second at Wimbledon ; this time after defeating Nicole Melichar and Květa Peschke . After another semi-finals at the US Open , Krejčíková became 40th number one in the double world rankings in women's tennis on October 22nd and held this position together with her partner Siniaková until January 13th, 2019. Due to their successes, the two qualified for the first time in 2018 for the WTA Championships in Singapore, where after victories against Melichar and Peschke as well as Andrea Sestini Hlaváčková and Barbora Strýcová they reached the final, losing to Kristina Mladenovic and Tímea Babos .
Beginning in 2019 Krejčíková reached at the Australian Open at the side of Kateřina Siniaková the quarterfinals in doubles and won with Rajeev Ram after a final against Astra Sharma and John-Patrick Smith the competition in the Mixed . Together with Siniaková, she also triumphed at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and Linz and was once again in the semifinals at Wimbledon . In their second participation in the WTA Championships of the best eight teams in Shenzhen, they were eliminated after only one victory and two defeats in the group stage. In the singles, Krejčíková only started sporadically in the 2019 season, but she won three ITF titles over the course of the year, including her largest to date at a tournament in the $ 80,000 category in Palm Harbor .
In 2020 Krejčíková defended her mixed title at the Australian Open after another double success in Shenzhen alongside Siniaková with Nikola Mektić , after beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray in the final . In doubles she came, again with Siniaková, to the semi-finals for the first time, in which they had to admit defeat to the top seeded Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová . In addition, she succeeded in singles in Melbourne for the first time successfully qualifying for a Grand Slam main field, in which she immediately came to the second round after a victory at the start over Kaia Kanepi , in which she failed to Jekaterina Alexandrowa . After the corona induced season demolition scored Krejčíková by reaching the knockout round of the French Open her up to then best career result in an individual, an improvement in the world rankings for the first time among the top 100. In the double she moved with Siniakova in the last four before, in the they were defeated by the eventual winners Mladenovic and Babos.
In 2021, Krejčíková competed in singles , doubles and mixed competitions at the Australian Open . While she was already defeated in the second round by Russia's number 29 seeded Yekaterina Alexandrowa , she made it into the final in doubles with her long-time partner Siniaková, where both Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka clearly had to admit defeat in two sets . The mixed competition was more successful, where she won her third Grand Slam title in a row with Rajeev Ram in Australia. The greatest success so far in the individual came in the same year at the French Open . While only two of the 30 seeded players made it past the quarter-finals, Krejčíková reached her first individual Grand Slam final after victories against the more highly rated competitors Elina Switolina , Cori Gauff and Maria Sakkari . There she defeated the Russian Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova in three sets (6: 1, 2: 6, 6: 4). She was the first Czech since Hana Mandlíková ( 1981 ) and the third unseeded player to triumph in Paris. At the award ceremony, Krejčíková remembered her trainer and former world-class player Jana Novotná, who died in 2017 . In addition, she won the doubles final with Siniaková , while she was eliminated in the mixed with Filip Polášek in the quarterfinals.
In 2019, Krejčíková made her debut for the Czech Fed Cup team in the 3-2 quarter-final defeat against Romania . Since then she has played two doubles matches for her country, one of which she was able to win.
