In addition to her three Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open 2018 , 2020 and the French Open 2019 alongside Kristina Mladenovic , she also won the WTA Tour Championships in 2017 , 2018 and 2019 three times in a row .

Career

Babos, who started tennis at the age of eight, describes herself as an aggressive player who does best on the hard court. The excellent junior player won the French Open , the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open in doubles in 2010 , each with Sloane Stephens, and moved up to second position in the world junior rankings. Her greatest success in singles was reaching the semi-finals at the 2009 Wimbledon junior women’s tournament .

In the same year she gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and won her first professional title at her second tournament participation. In 2010, Babos made her debut in front of a home crowd in Budapest in the main draw of a WTA tournament after receiving a wildcard from the organizers , but lost to Timea Bacsinszky at the start . In the same year she won the bronze medal in doubles at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore together with An-Sophie Mestach , after they were able to prevail in the third place match against Darija Gavrilowa and Julija Putinzewa from Russia. In the individual competition , she lost the game for the bronze medal against Jana Čepelová and finished fourth. Back on the ITF tour, she won her first two titles in the $ 25,000 category in the second half of the 2010 season, followed by two more in 2011. In the same year she was able to record her first victory in the main round of a WTA tournament against Anna-Giulia Remondina in Budapest, again with a wildcard . At the US Open , she then made her debut in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but failed in the first round. At the end of the season, she won her biggest title to date in Saguenay at an ITF tournament in the $ 50,000 category.

In 2012 the Hungarian made her breakthrough on the women's tour. After she played her first semi-final on the WTA Tour in Bogotá , she even reached the final against Alexandra Cadanțu the following week in Monterrey , where she won her first WTA title after a two-set win. As a result, she moved into the top 100 in the world rankings and was in the main round at the French Open for the first time. Her first win in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament was at Wimbledon with an opening win over Melanie Oudin , before she could only be beaten in the second round in the extension of the third set by Nadja Petrowa . At the side of Hsieh Su-wei , she won her first WTA doubles title at the Birmingham grass tournament . At the Olympic Games in London she reached the second round in singles after beating Galina Voskoboyeva , in which she was defeated by Angelique Kerber . She finished the season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.

In 2013 she won four more WTA double titles with changing partners. So she won alongside Mandy Minella in Bogotá and Marrakech , triumphed together with Kimiko Date- Krumm in Monterrey and won together with Jaroslawa Schwedowa in Tashkent . In the individual, she was eliminated from all four Grand Slam tournaments in the opening round and only achieved two quarter-finals on the WTA Tour. In 2014 she was successful for the first time in a tournament in the Premier category in Sydney with Lucie Šafářová , after which she won the title in Kuala Lumpur together with Chan Hao-ching . In addition, together with Kristina Mladenovic , she made her first entry into the double finals at Wimbledon , where Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci had to admit defeat. In the singles, however, she remained without a win in the main fields of Grand Slam tournaments this year and increasingly avoided the ITF tour, where she won a $ 75,000 tournament in Gifu and a $ 100,000 title at the end of the season in Poitiers. Category.

In 2015, the French woman won her first major double titles in the Premier 5 category in Dubai and Rome . In between, she reached the final of a WTA tournament in the singles for the second time at Marrakech , but was defeated there by Elina Switolina . At the end of the year she won the final against Misaki Doi at the Challenger tournament in Taipei and finished the season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the fourth time in a row. In the following season Babos succeeded together with Jaroslawa Schwedowa again the entry into the double-finals of Wimbledon , but again she lost, this time against Serena and Venus Williams . While Babos was untitled in doubles this year, she played her most consistent season in singles. In addition to two semi-finals in Shenzhen and Rabat , she came in Miami for the first time in the round of 16, in which she was defeated by Angelique Kerber, and reached her third individual final in Florianópolis , which she lost in three sets against Irina-Camelia Begu . At the subsequent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she was eliminated from the individual competition in the opening round against the later bronze medalist Petra Kvitová . After reaching the quarter-finals at the mandatory tournament in Cincinnati and the third round at the US Open 2016 , she achieved her best position in the world tennis rankings with position 25 . Due to her success she was able to qualify for the first time for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai at the end of the year , but after two defeats against Timea Bacsinszky and Zhang Shuai already failed in the group stage.

In 2017 she focused more on doubles again and after her success at the start of the season at the side of Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa in Sydney, she began a longer collaboration with the Czech Andrea Hlaváčková . The two of them won a total of four tour titles over the year in Rabat , Québec , Tashkent and Moscow and reached the quarter-finals at the US Open , before their collaboration with the title at the WTA Championships 2017 in Singapore by a final victory over Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson crowned. In the individual, Babos was able to win her second WTA title against Lucie Šafářová in front of a home crowd at the first indoor tournament in Budapest , but she ended the 2017 season despite two further finals in Québec and Tashkent , in which she faced Alison Van Uytvanck and Kateryna Bondarenko had to give up defeated, in the individual after a series of nine defeats in a row with a negative match record.

For the season 2018 she joined in double again with her former partner Kristina Mladenovic together at their side they after a victory in the final against the Russian duo Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Wesnina in the their first Grand Slam title Open Australian could achieve . In addition, in the first round of the individual competition against Coco Vandeweghe , she had her first success against a top 10 player in the main draw of a women's tournament. By reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on July 16, 2018, she became the 39th player and the first Hungarian ever to be number 1 in the WTA doubles world rankings and held this position, apart from a one-week break, for 13 weeks until she was replaced by Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková , against whom she, now with her partner Mladenovic, successfully defended her title in the final of the WTA Championships 2018 in Singapore . In the final of the US Open , the two had to admit defeat Ashleigh Barty and Coco Vandeweghe. In addition, Babos also achieved good results in individual cases. In Taipei she won the third individual title of her career in her seventh individual finals participation on the WTA Tour after beating Kateryna Koslowa in the final and then stood in the final of Monterrey for the second time since 2012 , where she had to admit defeat to Garbiñe Muguruza . In the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year, she only survived the first round in Melbourne , but was still able to win the season for the seventh time in a row among the top 100 in the rankings.

While Babos did not finish the 2019 season in singles for the first time since 2011 in the top 100 in the world rankings, she was able to record further successes in doubles with Mladenovic. After missing the title defense at the Australian Open 2019, the first triumph at the French Open in the final against the Chinese duo Duan Yingying and Zheng Saisai followed . In addition, the two of them repeated their title from the previous year at the WTA Championships 2019 , which took place in Shenzhen for the first time this season, after a safe win against Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová . After the match, the two were named WTA Doubles Team of the Year . At the Australian Open 2020 there was a re-edition of the final of the WTA Championships, from which Babos and Mladenovic emerged as clear winners again. For Babos it was the third, for her partner the fourth Grand Slam title in doubles.

In the Fed Cup , Babos has played 29 singles and doubles games for the Hungarian Fed Cup team since her debut in 2011 in a 3-0 win against Latvia , of which she was able to win 20 (individual balance 11: 6). Together with Réka Luca Jani , she forms the most successful double in Hungarian Fed Cup history with a total of five victorious duels.
