Nadeschda (Nadja) Wiktorowna Petrowa ( Russian: Надежда Викторовна Петрова , English transcription Nadezhda Petrova ; born June 8, 1982 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian tennis player .
Petrowa comes from a family of athletes. Her father, Viktor Petrow, was a hammer thrower, her mother Nadezhda Ilyina won the bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in the 400 m run with the relay. Since both parents accepted a contract as a coach in Egypt, Nadja spent most of her childhood there. She started playing tennis at the age of eight, and in 1998 she won the junior women’s competition at the Roland Garros tournament .
Career
Petrowa won four ITF singles titles and joined the professional circus in September 1999. In the world rankings she made it into the top 100 in the same year . In 2002, she fell back with a foot injury that prevented her from playing for most of the season. But in 2003 things went up again and on April 19, 2004 she reached her first top ten position with position 6.
On October 30, 2005, she won her first WTA singles title. In the final in Linz she defeated (in the absence of defending champion Amélie Mauresmo ) Patty Schnyder 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 1. She had already been there in 2003 in the finals, also in 2004 in Gold Coast ; she lost both finals to Ai Sugiyama . In 2005 she reached the final of the German Open in Berlin, in which she had to admit defeat to Justine Henin-Hardenne after a hard fight .
The following year she won three WTA tournaments within six weeks: in Doha , in Amelia Island and immediately afterwards in Charleston . On April 16, 2006, she moved up to 5th place in the ranking. On May 14, 2006 she won the German Open for the first time by beating Henin-Hardenne (4: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 5) for the first time , on May 15, 2006 she was third in the world rankings - the best position in her Career.
After Petrowa was out for several weeks in 2006 due to various injuries, she secured the title at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart in October . At the beginning of January 2007 she won the Hopman Cup together with Dmitri Tursunow . At the Australian Open , she was eliminated in round three against the eventual winner Serena Williams 6: 1, 5: 7 and 3: 6.
In the Fed Cup semi-finals on 14./15. July 2007 Petrowa contributed decisively to the 3-2 victory of the Russian team . She played two singles against the USA team : against Venus Williams she narrowly lost, against Meilen Tu she won without any problems. In doubles, she defeated Jelena Wesnina Williams and doubles specialist Lisa Raymond and secured her team a place in the final.
Nadja Petrowa was successful in doubles early on. She won 24 WTA titles, including seven in 2004 alone with Meghann Shaughnessy . With her she also became double world champion in 2004. Her best performance in a Grand Slam tournament was initially reaching the semi-finals at the French Open in 2003. In 2012 she was able to move into the final in the same place with Marija Kirilenko , in which the two were defeated by Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci .
In 2012, Petrowa was able to establish himself again in the top 20. At the US Open, she narrowly missed the quarter-finals in her match against Maria Sharapova (1: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6), which she had reached in 2004 and 2005. In doubles, she managed to get into the quarterfinals with Kirilenko (narrow three sets defeat against Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez ). On September 29, she secured herself at the Premier 5 tournament in Tokyo , where she defeated world number three Agnieszka Radwańska in three sets in the final, her 12th career title in singles.
At the WTA tournament in Sofia, she finally confirmed her return to her former strength when she won the final against Caroline Wozniacki 6-2 and 6-1 in November. The week before, she and Kirilenko had won the double title at the WTA Tour Championships . The two defeated the number 1 pairing Vinci / Errani in the semi-finals before they prevailed in two sets in the final against Hradecka / Hlawaczkowa (2 seeded).
In March 2013, Petrowa was able to set her record in doubles from 2005. After she was in the final of a WTA tournament four times in a row with Katarina Srebotnik and had won her 23rd double title in Miami , she was again number 3 in the double world rankings. At the lawn tournament in Eastbourne , she secured double title number 24. After her early departure in Charleston in April 2014, she has not played a match on the tour. On January 2, 2017, she announced the end of her career.
