Myriam Casanova (born June 20, 1985 in Altstätten , Canton St. Gallen ) is a former Swiss tennis player . She was a member of the Swiss Fed Cup team from 2001 to 2005 .

Career

She played her first professional tournament in 1999. She achieved the greatest success of her career in 2002 when she beat Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in two sets in the final of the WTA tournament in Brussels . She also reached the final in Budapest that same year , but lost to Martina Müller from Germany .

Also in the same year, she was chosen as the best newcomer in the Swiss Sportsman of the Year election . In April 2003 she achieved her best position in the tennis world rankings with 45th place .

Casanova was also a very good doubles player. In 2003 she and her French partner Marion Bartoli reached the semifinals of the US Open and the semifinals of the tournaments in Filderstadt and New Haven . In 2004 she stood alongside Alicia Molik in the final of the tournament in Amelia Island and with Eleni Daniilidou in the final in Antwerp .

In the course of her career, Casanova won $ 469,516 in prize money.

Casanova ended her career at the age of 20. She played her last match in the Fed Cup playoffs in July 2005, where she lost to Austrian Tamira Paszek with 1: 6 and 3: 6.

In February 2007 she returned for a single game at an ITF tournament in Biberach . In 2009 she tried again to make a comeback; at the ITF tournament in Ismaingen she fought her way through the qualification and was eliminated in the round of 16.
