Tamira Shelah Paszek (born December 6, 1990 in Dornbirn ) is an Austrian tennis player .

Career

2005 season

On July 2, 2005, Paszek first attracted international attention with her entry into the finals at the Wimbledon junior competition . The then 14-year-old had to admit defeat Agnieszka Radwańska 3: 6, 4: 6 in the final. Also in July 2005, with two victories against Switzerland (via Timea Bacsinszky and Myriam Casanova ), she played a key role in ensuring that Austria was able to play in the top class of the nation's competition (World Group I) in the Fed Cup in 2006. In September 2005 she won her first title at the ITF tournament in Sofia - it was only her second appearance at the ITF Women's Circuit . After surviving the qualification, she defeated the German Kristina Barrois nine years older in the final . The day before, she had already won the double competition alongside Sanja Ančić . In October 2005 Paszek made her debut on the WTA Tour and won her first match against Jelena Wesnina 7: 6, 6 , 1: 6, 7: 5 at the Generali Ladies in Linz, endowed with 585,000 US dollars . This victory made her the greatest hope for young talent in Austrian women's tennis almost overnight.

2006 season

This year she reached the final at the junior tournament of the US Open , where she had to admit defeat to the top seeded Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova (6: 3, 4: 6, 5: 7). On September 24, 2006, she achieved her greatest success to date at the WTA tournament Banka Koper Slovenia Open . In her third tournament she played as a qualifier until the final, where she defeated number 6 seed Maria Elena Camerin 7: 5, 6: 1. In this tournament she gave up only one set (first round, in the 4: 6, 6: 2 and 6: 1 against Karolina Kosińska ). With 15 years, 9 months and 24 days, Paszek is the seventh youngest tournament winner in the WTA statistics. That season she was the only qualifier to win a title on the tour.

2007 season

At the end of 2006, Paszek announced that she would play all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2007 . At the Australian Open , she defeated Séverine Brémond 6: 1, 6: 4 after successfully qualifying . In the second round, however, she was defeated by number 22 seeded Wera Swonarjowa with 1: 6, 3: 6. She then started with the juniors, where she was eliminated in round three against Urszula Radwańska 3: 6, 3: 6. The Dubai Duty Free Women's Open also got off to a successful start for Paszek. Again she won all three qualifying rounds and defeated Katarina Srebotnik 7: 5, 6: 3 in the main draw . She played the strongest match of her young career in round two against world number two and top seed Justine Henin . Paszek dominated the five-time Grand Slam winner in the first set with powerful basic strokes and very good tactics. Henin was finally able to convert her first match point to 4: 6, 7: 5, 6: 1 after a playing time of 2:25 hours. With this match, Paszek moved up from 128th to 101st in the world rankings. After her successful appearance in the Fed Cup against Australia, Paszek also played her way into the main draw of the J & S Cup in Warsaw, but lost there in the first round against qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko with 1: 6, 7: 6 3 , 1: 6. At the Qatar Total German Open in Berlin she failed in the third qualifying round to Zuzana Ondrášková with 6: 4, 4: 6, 3: 6. With a three-set win over Michaëlla Krajicek in the second qualifying round, Paszek reached the main draw of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. In round one she defeated Nicole Pratt 6: 7 1 , 6: 0 and 6: 2, but then lost to number 3 seed Jelena Janković (3: 6, 4: 6). At the French Open, Paszek lost again to defending champion Justine Henin in the second round. She delivered a terrific comeback when she made up a 5-0 deficit in the first set - with a score of 5: 6 she was only one point away from a tie-break decision. With the score of 3-0 for the Belgian, the game had to be interrupted for more than an hour in the second set due to rain. After the break, Paszek did not find his way back into the game; she lost the match after a playing time of 1:23 hours with 5: 7, 1: 6. In Wimbledon she reached the round of 16 and was eliminated there against the number 5 seed Swetlana Kuznetsova with 3: 6, 2: 6. Paszek also reached the round of 16 at the US Open , which she lost to Anna Tschakwetadze with 1: 6, 5: 7. At the Generali Ladies Open , she failed in round two.

2008 season

At the beginning of the season she reached the semi-finals in Auckland, which she lost to Lindsay Davenport 4-6, 3-6. At the Australian Open, she lost in the first round against number 3 seeded Jelena Janković. In the 3 hour and 10 minute game, Paszek missed three match points and finally had to admit defeat 6: 2, 2: 6, [10:12]. At the Indian Wells Masters in California, she had to give up in her third round match against Casey Dellacqua when the score was 1: 6 and 0: 4. The reason given was a physical weakness (she had been struggling with stomach problems for a long time). After a dry spell, she reached the quarter-finals at the tournament in Montreal. Their only final appearance of the year in Bali was lost 3: 6, 0: 6 against Patty Schnyder . Due to the unsatisfactory start to the season, Paszek was not nominated for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

2009 season

The season began with a series of first-round defeats. It was only in March that Paszek reached the second round at the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments. Due to back problems, her start at Wimbledon was in jeopardy. She then had to abort her first round game promptly. At a press conference on July 21, 2009, Paszek stated that she was having the back injury treated by an alternative doctor. She first took blood from her, enriched it with homeopathic remedies and then injected this blood back into her. Since autologous blood treatments are notifiable, doping proceedings have been initiated. The suspension was finally lifted in early August as no clear violation could be identified. One month later, NADA's proceedings against Paszek were also discontinued. In September she had to write off the season for good because of the back injury, she asked the WTA for a protected ranking .

2010 season

Paszek 2010 at the US Open

2010 did not start well for Paszek either. After a first round win in Hobart, she lost her opening match at the Australian Open. More first round defeats followed, which even dropped her from the top 300. In May she won the ITF tournament in Izmir . At the US Open , she was eliminated in round two against Chan Yung-jan . In Québec she won eight games with qualification and secured her second WTA title with a final victory (7: 6, 6 , 2: 6, 7: 5) over Bethanie Mattek-Sands . At the end of the season, Paszek was the second best Austrian after Sybille Bammer with position 90 in the WTA ranking .

2011 season

In contrast to the last Grand Slam tournaments, she was directly qualified for the main draw at the Australian Open and the French Open. However, they failed in the first round. Including the French Open, she never got past the second round in the spring. Then she reached the third round at the ITF tournament in Nottingham and the WTA tournament in Birmingham . In June she was the only Austrian in the top 100 of the WTA world rankings. At Wimbledon , Paszek finally marked a new career high point. Among other things, by defeating the title holder in 2010 and finalist in 2011, Francesca Schiavone , she made it into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. There she lost to Viktoria Azaranka, who was seeded on 4 . On August 6th, Paszek had to give up in the last sixteen of the Mercury Insurance Open after an abdominal muscle injury, but on August 8th she equaled her best ranking in the world rankings of July 2007 with 35th place. She was eliminated at the US Open (still slightly damaged) already in the first round.

2012 season

With ÖTV sports director Clemens Trimmel before the 2012 Olympic Games

Paszek lost in round 1 of the Australian Open and the French Open. Only in Indian Wells (March) and Strasbourg (May) did she survive her opening match. She celebrated her greatest success in June at the grass tournament in Eastbourne , when she was able to turn the third match point in the final against Angelique Kerber after defending five match points. In Wimbledon she won her first round match against the 7th seeded Caroline Wozniacki 5: 7, 7: 6 4 , 6: 4 and in the second round against Alizé Cornet 6: 2, 6: 1. With a 6: 2, 6: 2 win over Roberta Vinci , Paszek reached the quarter-finals of the tournament on July 2, after defeating Yanina Wickmayer in three sets (2: 6, 7: 6, 4 , 7: 5) had been able to defeat. Against Asaranka, however, she had no chance in the round of the last eight. At the Olympic Games , for which she was subsequently nominated, she went into the race as a secret favorite for a medal. However, she was eliminated against Alizé Cornet in round one. Even at the US Open , where it was seeded for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament, it was over in round one.

2013 season

The year began with ten first round defeats in eleven tournaments. She only reached the second round at the Australian Open . With this one victory, she achieved her best placement so far on February 11, 2013 as number 26 in the WTA rankings. The negative streak dragged on until the end of the year. Only at the $ 50,000 ITF tournament in Limoges did she win more than one match; she even reached the final, which she lost to Kristýna Plíšková in three sets. In the world rankings, she dropped to number 181 by the end of the year.

2014 season

Paszek was eliminated in the second round of qualifying for the Australian Open against Duan Yingying and slipped in the world rankings to 218th. In February she successfully played two $ 25,000 ITF tournaments; she won the tournament at Rancho Santa Fe and was in the final in Surprise . She also reached a final in April at the $ 25,000 ITF tournament in Wiesbaden . At the French Open she reached the second round after successfully qualifying. In Wimbledon , she did not get past round one after qualifying. At the US Open , she failed in qualifying.

Illness and restart

At the end of October, Paszek underwent a combined almond, sinus and maxillary sinus surgery because of chronic health problems. She then fell ill with severe trigeminal neuralgia , possibly triggered by the operation . In spring 2017 she tried a comeback in two tournaments, but had to give up in both of them in the first game.

Since September 2017 it is no longer in the world rankings.

After a long break from training, she competed for the first time with a protected ranking at the end of April 2018. For the ITF tournament in Wiesbaden she received a wildcard for singles and doubles, but lost in the first round.

She played her last tournaments so far in March 2019 in Sharm el-Sheikh , where she reached the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Personal

Paszek's father, whose parents were of Indian descent, was born in Tanzania and raised in Kenya ; he lived in Canada for 15 years and moved to Austria in 1994 . Paszek's mother was born in Chile and came to Austria as a child. Her mother was Austrian, her father had French and Polish roots; hence the Polish surname comes from. Tamira Paszek has a younger brother. She attended the Bundesreal- and Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Dornbirn-Schoren .
