The WTA Dubai (officially: Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships ) is a women's tennis tournament of the WTA Tour , which is held in the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates . Since 2015, it has been exchanging value with the tournament in Doha every year : In the odd years it belongs to the Premier 5 category , while in the even years it is classified as Premier .
Venue
The tournament will be held in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Center (previously: Aviation Club Tennis Center), which opened in 1996. The main square has a capacity of 5,000 spectators.
Conflict over Shahar Peer 2009
The tournament got into talk in 2009 apart from sport. Israeli player Shahar Peer has been denied both a visa (the United Arab Emirates does not have diplomatic relations with Israel ) and entry into the tournament, which is a combined men's and women's tournament. Tournament director Salah Tahlak justified this by saying that the presence of peers could have caused anger in the Arab world, as was the case at the tournament in Auckland in response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts in 2008/09 . The process made waves; some players, including Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova , and WTA chairman Larry Scott were outraged, the Tennis Channel refused a broadcast and the Wall Street Journal announced its sponsorship. Because of this, some top players, including Andy Roddick , canceled their participation. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal also withdrew from the tournament, but both justified this with an injury. The WTA finally sued the tournament management for their approach with a fine of 300,000 US dollars.
