Jelena Janković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Јелена Јанковић , born February 28, 1985 in Belgrade , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian tennis player . From late 2008 to early 2009 she was number 1 in the WTA world rankings for 18 weeks .
Jelena Janković is the third child of Veselin and Snežana Janković, who both work as economists . Jelena started playing tennis at the age of nine. Later, she was in the tennis academy of Nick Bollettieri in Bradenton trained, where she has a residence today. In September 2007, Jelena Jankovic next was Ana Ivanovic , Aleksandar Đorđević and Emir Kusturica for UNICEF appointed -Botschafterin for Serbia.
Career
Janković played her first professional season in 2000. In 2001 she won the junior competition at the Australian Open . In 2003 she won her first ITF tournament in Dubai , reaching number 90 in the WTA world rankings and making it into the top 100 for the first time.
Since 2001 she has played for the Serbian Fed Cup team , for which she has already contributed 34 wins in 50 games.
2004-2006
In 2004 she won her first WTA tournament in Budapest . In 2005 she reached the finals of three WTA tournaments. In Dubai she lost to Lindsay Davenport in three sets with 4: 6, 6: 3 and 4: 6. In Birmingham she had to admit defeat to Marija Sharapova 2: 6, 6: 4 and 1: 6. In Seoul she lost the final against Nicole Vaidišová 5-7 and 3-6.
In 2006 she reached the quarter-finals in Rome , where she lost to Venus Williams 7: 5, 4: 6, 1: 6. In Wimbledon she was able to beat the US-American who started as the defending champion 7: 6, 6 , 4: 6, 6: 4. At the WTA tournament in Los Angeles she defeated Ana Ivanović 6: 4, 7: 6 in the quarterfinals and Serena Williams 6: 4 and 6: 3 in the semifinals , before she defeated Jelena Dementjewa 3: 6, 6: 4 and in the final 4: 6 lost.
At the US Open she reached the semi-finals after victories over Nicole Vaidišová, Swetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Dementjewa, in which she lost to Justine Henin 6: 4, 4: 6 and 0: 6. Even after the US Open, she presented herself in good shape. In Beijing she reached the semi-finals, which she lost to Amélie Mauresmo 1: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 7 . In Stuttgart she reached the quarter-finals, where she was eliminated against Swetlana Kuznetsova with 4: 6 and 1: 6. By the end of the year she also reached the quarter-finals in Linz and Québec.
2007
At the beginning of 2007 Janković won the WTA tournament in Auckland (final against Wera Swonarjowa ). In Sydney she only had to admit defeat to Kim Clijsters 4: 6, 7: 6, 6: 4 in the final, in which she could not use two match points in the second set. At the Australian Open she reached the round of 16, in which she was defeated by the eventual winner Serena Williams 3: 6 and 2: 6.
In the quarter-finals in Tokyo Janković lost 6: 3, 4: 6 and 2: 6 against Ivanović. At the tournaments in Dubai and Doha she reached the semifinals. In the important Tier I tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , she reached the round of 16 and the third round.
In the quarterfinals of Amelia Island Janković lost again to Ivanović. At the WTA tournament in Charleston , she defeated Dinara Safina 6-2 and 6-2 in the final , thus securing her third and so far biggest title. At her next clay court tournament in Warsaw she reached the semi-finals, which she lost to Henin with 5: 7, 6: 2 and 4: 6. In Berlin , they met Henin again in the quarter-finals and lost 6: 3, 4: 6 and 4: 6 despite a 4-0 lead in the third set.
In Rome she won her third title in 2007. In the final she defeated Kuznetsova 7: 5 and 6: 1. At the French Open, Janković reached the semi-finals, but lost again to Henin, this time with 2: 6 and 2: 6. She moved up to 3rd place in the ranking - her best placement to date. At her first lawn tournament in 2007 in Birmingham , she reached the final with victories over Zwetana Pironkowa , Marija Kirilenko , Aljona Bondarenko and Mara Santangelo , in which she defeated Sharapova 4-6, 6-3 and 7-5. Also in Eastbourne she was after victories over Meilen Tu , Aljona Bondarenko and Dinara Safina in the final, which she lost against Anna Tschakwetadze with 6: 7 2 , 6: 3 and 3: 6. In Wimbledon she reached the round of 16 and was defeated by Marion Bartoli in three sets. However, she won the title in mixed competition alongside Jamie Murray .
At the tournament in Los Angeles Janković reached the semifinals, there she was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Ana Ivanović. In Toronto she reached the final, in which she was once again defeated by Justine Henin, this time with 6: 7 and 5: 7. At the US Open, she was able to advance to the quarterfinals, which she lost to Venus Williams 6: 4, 1: 6 and 6: 7.
2008: Number 1 in the world rankings
At the Australian Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships in March, she reached the semifinals and lost to Sharapova and Kuznetsova. In mid-March she was defeated in the semi-finals by Indian Wells Ivanović. At the WTA tournament in Miami, she advanced to the final, which she lost to Serena Williams 6: 1, 5: 7, 3: 6. Her first title win in 2008 was her title defense in Rome, where she won the final against Alizé Cornet 6-2, 6-2. In the semi-finals of the French Open, she was eliminated 4-6, 6: 3, 4: 6 against Ana Ivanović.
On August 11, 2008, Janković was number one in the world rankings for a week. She replaced Ivanović at the top, but this returned to the top position on August 18, 2008. At the US Open, Janković reached a final at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time , but lost it to Serena Williams 4-6 and 5-7.
At the end of September, she won the WTA tournament in Beijing against Svetlana Kuznetsova 6: 3, 6: 2. At the beginning of October she won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart against Nadja Petrowa 6: 4 and 6: 3, making her number one again in the world rankings. Her third tournament victory in a row she was able to win at the Moscow Kremlin Cup with a 6: 2, 6: 4 final victory over Vera Swonaryova. At the WTA Tour Championships of the best eight players of the year, Janković was able to reach the semi-finals, but lost there against Venus Williams. Williams won the first set 6-2, but had to hand over the second set 2-6 to Janković. The third set went 6-3 to Williams. Despite the defeat, Janković was able to finish the year as number one.
2009
At the Australian Open, the world number one reached the round of 16, which they lost to Marion Bartoli with 1: 6 and 4: 6. In the semifinals of the Paris Open , she lost to Amélie Mauresmo 2: 6, 6: 0 and 1: 6. In Dubai , she did not make it to the round of 16. In Indian Wells she lost her first game against the 42nd in the world rankings, Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova , with 4: 6 and 4: 6. At the next tournament in Miami, she was eliminated in the second round. Her first win of the year was in Marbella against Carla Suárez Navarro. At the French Open, she lost to Sorana Cîrstea 6: 3, 0: 6 and 7: 9 in the round of 16 . Things didn't go well at Wimbledon either when she lost to 17-year-old Melanie Oudin in the third round . In Stanford she reached the quarterfinals, in which she lost to Marion Bartoli after two match points were awarded. The Cincinnati WTA tournament was her second tournament to win that year. She defeated Dinara Safina 6: 4 and 6: 2 in the final. In the final of the WTA tournament in Tokyo, she had to give up against Sharapova when the score was 2: 5 due to injury.
For the final WTA Tour Championships Janković qualified eighth in the world rankings with a lead of five points over Swonarjowa. In the semifinals she failed there on Venus Williams. She finished the year in 8th place in the world rankings.
2010
In her first match in Sydney in 2010 , she lost in round one to Ágnes Szávay . At the Australian Open , she was eliminated in the third round against Aljona Bondarenko . The first tournament she won that year was the Indian Wells Masters , where she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final.
In Rome she first defeated Venus Williams in the quarterfinals and then her sister Serena in the semifinals. In the final she was then defeated by María José Martínez Sánchez 6: 7, 5 and 5: 7. At the French Open she reached the semi-finals, in which she had to admit defeat to Samantha Stosur 1: 6, 2: 6. At Wimbledon she reached the round of 16; the game against Vera Swonaryova she had to give up in the second set due to injury. Even at the US Open Series , the individual did not go according to plan; her best result there was a round of 16 participation in Cincinnati , where she drew the short straw against Oqgul Omonmurodova in two sets.
2013
Janković won her twelfth WTA title in Bogotá in February . At the Australian Open 2013 she was eliminated in the third round against Ana Ivanović 5-7 and 3-6. At the WTA tournament in Indian Wells she failed in the second round, at the Sony Open in Miami she lost in the semifinals with 2: 6 and 1: 6 against Maria Sharapova . At the clay court tournament in Rome, she made it to the quarterfinals as a non-seed, in which she had to admit defeat to Simona Halep . At the French Open she reached the quarter-finals, which she lost to Sharapova 6-0, 4-6 and 3-6 despite winning the first set. On the way there she had defeated the former US Open winner Samantha Stosur in the third round. At Wimbledon , Janković was eliminated in the second round against Wesna Dolonz .
She played her last international tournament in August 2017.
