Mara Santangelo (born June 28, 1981 in Latina ) is a former Italian tennis player .

Career

Santangelo, who started tennis at the age of nine, became a professional player in 1998.

On February 19, 2006 she won the Tier III tournament Bangalore Open with a three-set victory in the final over Jelena Kostanić . She was also able to win eight individual titles in ITF tournaments. In all four Grand Slam tournaments she was in the third round in 2006/2007, in 2004 in Melbourne she even reached the second round.

Her career was much more successful in doubles, where she won a total of eight WTA titles and also her only Grand Slam title at the 2007 French Open at Alicia Molik's side .

With the Italian team , she won the Fed Cup trophy in 2006 ; in the final they defeated the Belgian team with the then number one, Justine Henin-Hardenne .

On January 28, 2011, Santangelo announced her retirement from professional tennis due to persistent foot problems.

Personal

Santangelo lives in Rome . After her childhood in Latina, she lived and trained during her professional career mainly in the north of Italy ( Verona , Cavalese and Bozen ).
