Latina is the capital of the Italian province of Latina and with 129,133 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) the second largest city in the Lazio region after Rome . From 1932 it was realized as a planned city during the fascist era .

geography

Location of Latina in the province
In the Botanical Garden of Fogliano

Latina is 67 km southeast of Rome and 159 km northwest of Naples in the Pontine plain , which extends from Monte Circeo to the city limits of Rome. With the districts Lido di Foce Verde, Lido di Latina and Lido di Capo Portiere, the city has three seaside resorts on the Tyrrhenian Sea . The urban area extends in the north to the foot of the Monti Lepini .

The coastal lake Lago di Fogliano is part of the Circeo National Park. These include the botanical garden of Borgo di Villa Fogliano and the Caetani manor from the 18th century.

The municipal area extends from 0 to 75 meters above sea level .

The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).

The neighboring municipalities, clockwise: Nettuno ( RM ), Aprilia , Cisterna di Latina , Sermoneta , Sezze , Pontinia and Sabaudia .

Districts

Latina is divided into the seven districts Latina Centro (center), Latina Ovest (west), Latina Est (east), Latina Mare (sea coast), Latina north, Latina south and Latina Scalo (train station). The districts each have a president and 20 district councilors, who are elected at the same time as the city council.

traffic

Latina is integrated into the trunk road network with the SS 7 Via Appia (Rome- Caserta - Brindisi ), the SS 148 Via Pontina (Rome- Terracina ), and the SS 156 Via dei Monti Lepini (Latina- Frosinone ).

The Latina-Scalo station (formerly Littoria Stazione), 9 km north of the city center, is on the Roma – Formia – Napoli railway line and, like the post office, was planned by Angiolo Mazzoni . After the inauguration of the station in 1932, an expansion followed between 1934 and 1936. In the district of Borgo San Michele there is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie Condor ) for general aviation .

history

From 1930 onwards, Benito Mussolini had the Pontine Marshes south of Rome drained and the agricultural areas gained by farming families from Friuli and Veneto settled. The founding of the city of Littoria, as Latina was originally called, initially contradicted the previous anti- urbanist fascist propaganda with its exaggeration of rural rural life. However, it had become necessary because the planned decentralized infrastructure could not ensure the management and supply of the newly won areas. On June 30, 1932, the commissioner for drainage, Orsolini Cencelli, laid the foundation stone for the new administrative center, and the little-known architect Oriolo Frezzotti was hired as city planner.

The city was built on an octagon shape . In contrast to the somewhat later foundations such as Sabaudia, the buildings were kept in a decidedly simple and rural style in the first construction phase and, due to the obvious incompatibility with the official party line, were also erected without journalistic support. Only towards the end of the year did Mussolini integrate the founding of cities as agricultural community centers (Centri comunali agricoli) into the ideological concept of drainage. As early as December 18, 1932, he inaugurated the new town of Littoria from the balcony of the town hall with great propaganda effort. Modern buildings such as the post office by Angiolo Mazzoni (1934) were built under the changed conditions . In 1934 Littoria became the capital of the newly founded province of the same name.

The name Littoria was derived from the bundles of lictors , which were the central symbol of rule of the Italian fascists. In 1946 the city was renamed Latina .

politics

Vincenzo Zaccheo ( PdL , Alleanza Nazionale until 2008 ) was elected mayor in May 2002 and confirmed in office in May 2007 - despite a scandal in 2005 when, at his suggestion, a large mosaic was created in the porticoes of the town hall, which the glorified fascist leader Benito Mussolini . His center-right alliance made up the majority in the municipal council with 25 out of 40 seats. His city government was forced to resign in April 2010 after the TV show Striscia la notizia published a recording of a confidential conversation by Zaccheo in which he complained to regional president Renata Polverini about a party colleague, whereupon 22 city councilors announced their resignation. In the early elections from 15./16. In May 2011 Giovanni Di Giorgi ( PdL ) was elected mayor, his center-right alliance provided 21 of the 32 municipal councilors. Since June 20, 2016, Damiano Coletta (* 1960) from the Lista Civica (civil list), originally from Latina, has been the new mayor of Latina. His party provides 21 of the 32 local councils.
