Castelforte

geography

Castelforte lies on the eastern slope of the Monti Aurunci . It has almost grown together with the neighboring village of Santi Cosma e Damiano . While the district of Suio is also located on a hill of the Monti Aurunci, the districts of Casteluccio, Forme di Suio and Terme di Suio extend in the valley of the Garigliano , the border river to Campania .

Castelforte is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Aurunci .

It borders on the following neighboring municipalities: Coreno Ausonio ( FR ), Rocca d'Evandro ( CE ), Sant'Andrea del Garigliano (FR), Santi Cosma e Damiano , Sessa Aurunca (CE), Vallemaio (FR).

history

According to some historians, Castelforte was built on the ruins of the Aurunker city of Vescia, which was built in 314 BC. Was destroyed by the Romans. Even if there were numerous archaeological finds from this time in the municipality, this thesis has not yet been proven.

The medieval Castelforte was created during the Migration Period , when the inhabitants of the coastal plain were looking for places in the nearby mountains that were easier to defend. At that time it belonged to the Duchy of Traetto .
From 1809 to 1820 and 1928 to 1947 it was united with Santi Cosma e Damiano in one municipality.

Thermal springs

The Romans used the thermal springs on the banks of the Garigliano and called them "Acquae Vescinae". The Terme di Suio, which lie below the village of Suio and include cold, warm and sulphurous springs, were developed into health resorts after the Second World War.
