history

In the Volscian seaside town of Anxur was 329 BC. The Roman citizen colony Tarracina was created after the Romans had defeated the local Volscians. The residents of Tarracina received Roman citizenship through acceptance into the Latin Confederation . Thus the inhabitants of Tarracina formed "the subordinate association of the Roman state territory".

Located in a key strategic position on annexed land, Tarracina was a Latin colony of privileged class. When a resident of Tarracina moved to Rome, about 100 km away, Roman citizenship was fully revived. Cicero described this form of the Latin colony as "bulwarks of Roman rule" in Italy.

From ancient Anxur / Tarracina testify numerous remains and finds, often in the form of spoils in medieval buildings like the Cathedral are installed. Since 312 BC The Via Appia ran through the city. The most important excavation is the sanctuary of Jupiter Anxur, which lies above the city on the steep rock spur Monte S. Angelo and from which the impressive substructures of the temple terrace have been preserved.

In 591 the synagogue was destroyed. After sharp criticism from Pope Gregory I (Pope 590-604), he ordered it to be rebuilt at a greater distance from the church, with reference to the ostensibly "disturbing chant" ("vox psallentium"). It has not been preserved.

From here, in the urban area, the SR 148 Via Pontina , which runs parallel to the Via Appia to Rome, and the state road 213 Via Flacca , which runs along the coast to Formia . Via the state road 156 dei Monti Lepini you can reach the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway in 47 km at the Frosinone exit .

Terracina station is the end of the Terracina – Priverno line , a branch line of the Rome – Formia – Naples line . The connection was discontinued in 2012 after a rock fall, and trains have stopped running since then. Buses run to the Monte San Biagio train station.
