San Felice Circeo is a municipality in the province of Latina in the Italian region of Lazio with 10,305 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 99 kilometers southeast of Rome .

geography

San Felice Circeo is located on Monte Circeo , a limestone mountain rising steeply from the Pontine plain directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea . It is located in the Circeo National Park, founded in 1934 . The mountain, which was originally an island, is, according to tradition, equated with the island of the sorceress Circe .

politics

In June 2017, Giuseppe Schiboni was elected mayor, who succeeded the sports official Giovanni Petrucci , who was elected in 2012 . Schiboni belongs to the middle-left- oriented citizens list "Circeo Futura", which has the majority in the municipal council with eight out of twelve seats (40.78% of the votes). Before 2012 Vincenzo Cerasoli ( Forza Italia ) was mayor, who was elected in May 2007.

We have been working with the German city of Mettmann since 2008. A partnership is sought. The two cities connect finds of an early man of the Neanderthal type ; in San Felice in 1939 an almost completely preserved skull of this early man was found.
