history

Aprilia was the fourth city to be founded in the Pontine Marshes, which had been drained since 1930, after Littoria , Sabaudia and Pontinia . The city was founded by Benito Mussolini on April 25, 1936 and officially inaugurated on October 29, 1937. It got its name from its founding month April, or from the Venus Aprilia , the fertile Venus.

Located on a direct route between Anzio and Rome, Aprilia was the focus of the Battle of Rome in 1944 and was bombed by the Allies. (See Operation Shingle .)

After the Second World War, the city began to transform from an agricultural center to an industrial city.
