history
The predecessor town of Sermoneta was probably ancient Sulmo , which was mentioned by Virgil and Pliny among others . Archaeological studies locate it north of the Valvisciolo Abbey on Monte Carbolino, a little below the present-day location. However, there is also the opinion to identify this site with the ancient Pometia.
The medieval Sermoneta, the name of which is said to be derived from Sulmonetta (little Sulmo), was first mentioned in the 11th century. In the 13th century the Roman family of Annibaldi is documented as the owner of the place. In 1297 Boniface VIII bought the property from Annibaldi for 140,000 gold ducats. His family, the Caetani , established the center of their rule in the lower Lazio and expanded the castle into their residence. In 1499, Alexander VI confiscated Sermoneta and handed over the property to his daughter Lucrezia . After Sermoneta was returned to the Caetani after the fall of the Borgia , they stayed in Rome and kept the castle as a barely inhabited fortress. On October 23, 1583 Onorato IV. Caetani by Pope Gregory XIII. appointed Duke of Sermoneta. The main line of the family died in 1977 in female succession with Lelia Caetani, 18th Duchess of Sermoneta, 9th Princess of Teano, 2nd Princess of Bassiano and 14th Marchesa of Cisterna. After a long decline, the drainage of the Pontine Marshes in 1929 led to a renewed upswing in Sermoneta.

Attractions
Sermoneta preserves a medieval town center with steep streets that lead to the castle, the Castello Caetani.
- The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 13th century over a Cybele temple . Inside there is a panel of the Madonna and Angels by Benozzo Gozzoli .
- The Castello Caetani was founded by the noble Annibaldi family in the 13th century and expanded by the Caetani. Alexander VI. had Antonio da Sangallo's castle expanded into a fortress; the Casa del Cardinale served as a residence for Cesare Borgia when he was still a cardinal. After the fall of the Borgia, the castle was returned to the Caetani. Today it is owned by the municipality. The most important part is the 42 meter high keep, the Maschio.
- To the north of Sermoneta lies the Valvisciolo Abbey , founded in the 8th century by Greek monks of the order of the Basilians , which for a time belonged to the Knights Templar and was then taken over by the Cistercians. It has been a priory of Casamari Abbey since 1863 .
