Enrico Caetani (born August 6, 1550 in Sermoneta , † December 13, 1599 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and titular patriarch .

Life

He was born in Sermoneta, the second son of Bonifacio Caetani, Lord of Sermoneta, and Katharina, daughter of Lord of Carpi, Alberto Pio. Enrico was the nephew of Cardinal Niccolò Caetani and brother of Camillo Caetani , uncle of Bonifazio and Antonio Caetani and great-uncle of Cardinal Luigi Caetani . Among his ancestors, Benedetto Caetani stands out, who later became Pope Boniface VIII.

He studied at the University of Perugia , where he graduated in 1571 in utroque iure .

On July 29, 1585 he was elected Latin Patriarch of Alexandria and on August 11 of the same year he was consecrated bishop by Cardinal Giulio Antonio Santori in the Sistine Chapel . On December 18 of the same year, Pope Sixtus V elevated him to the rank of cardinal. On January 15, 1586 he received the cardinal's hat and became cardinal priest of Santa Pudenziana .

In 1589 he was appointed by the Pope at the head of the papal embassy after the assassination of King Henry III. Sent to France to defend the Church during the civil war between Catholics and Huguenots . He was accompanied by the Jesuit Cardinal Robert Bellarmine , a famous theologian.

Enrico Caetani took part in the conclave of 1591 that Pope Innocent IX. elected, and in the conclave of 1592 , which Pope Clement VIII elected, participated.

He died at the age of 49 and was given an elaborate tomb in his titular church .
