Antonio Caetani

Antonio Caetani (* 1566 in Rome ; † March 17, 1624 ibid) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Antonio Caetani was born in Rome in 1566 and was the brother of Cardinal Bonifacio and nephew of Niccolò Caetani di Sermoneta , the former Archbishop of Capua .

On August 31, 1605 he was appointed Archbishop of Capua by Pope Paul V and held this office until his death. Although he was archbishop for 17 years, his stays in the diocese were always short-term, as he was apostolic nuncio at the imperial court of Rudolf II in Prague from 1607 to 1610 and at the Spanish court in Madrid from 1611 to 1618 . He appointed Felice Siliceo, the former provost of Canosa , vicar general of the archdiocese. In 1612, 1613 and 1616 he made a pastoral trip to his archdiocese. Luigi Caetani was appointed episcopal coadjutor and followed him to the bishopric on the day of his death.

Pope Gregory XV elevated him to the rank of cardinal on April 19, 1621 in the consistory . On May 17, 1621 he received the titular church of Santa Pudenziana as a cardinal priest .

He died in Rome on March 17, 1624 at the age of 58 and is buried in Santa Pudenziana .
