Bonifazio Caetani (* 1567 in Rome ; † June 24, 1617 there ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop .

biography

Bonifazio Caetani was born in Rome in 1567 as the fourth son of Onorato, Lord of Sermoneta , and Agnese Colonna di Paliano. He was the brother of Antonio Caetani , great-nephew of Cardinal Niccolò Caetani , nephew of Cardinal Enrico Caetani and uncle of Cardinal Luigi Caetani . The figure of Benedetto Caetani, who later became Pope Boniface VIII, stands out among his ancestors . On his mother's side he was a cousin of Cardinal Ascanio Colonna .

From 1586 he studied law at the University of Bologna , where he was a student of Gerolamo Boccadiferro and made friends with Torquato Tasso . He holds a PhD in Civil and Canon Law from the University of Perugia .

In 1596 he accompanied his uncle Enrico Caetani on a mission to the emperor with the Polish king Sigismund III. Wasa to unite in the fight against the Turks. The mission failed because of the existing claims of the Habsburgs to the Polish crown and also because of the disputes between the emperor and Poland over rule over Moldavia and Wallachia .

On November 8, 1599, he was appointed Bishop of Cassano by Pope Clement VIII . Pope Paul V elevated him to the rank of cardinal priest of Santa Pudenziana in the consistory on September 11, 1606 . On April 22, 1613 he was transferred to the metropolitan seat of Taranto.

Caetani died on June 24, 1617 at the age of 50 and was buried in Santa Pudenziana.
