Roberto Ubaldini (* 1581 in Florence , † April 22, 1635 in Rome ), also Roberto degli Ubaldini , was an Italian bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a noble family in the Tuscan Apennines . His father was Marco Antonio Ubaldini from the family of the Counts of Gagliano, his mother was Lucrezia della Gherardesca. He was a distant relative of Cardinal Ottaviano Ubaldini and a maternal grand-nephew of Pope Leo XI. and distant relative of Cardinal Ottavio Ridolfi .

Roberto Ubaldini studied law at the University of Pisa, where he received his doctorate iuris utriusque . He was a canon of the Cathedral of Florence from 1595 to 1605 and from 1598 a member of the court of his great uncle, Cardinal Ottavio Ridolfi. At the end of May 1605 he became chamberlain of Pope Paul V and on July 9, 1606 canon of the Vatican Basilica , which he only remained until October 1607, when he resigned in favor of his brother Ugone , who was nuncio in France at the time .

On October 1, 1607, he was appointed Bishop of Montepulciano . He was ordained bishop on February 3, 1608 in Paris by Cardinal Jacques-Davy Duperron , co-consecrators were Henri de Gondi , Bishop of Paris , and Jean de Bonzi , Bishop of Béziers .

In the consistory of December 2, 1615 , Pope Paul V elevated him to cardinal priest and awarded him the red hat on February 28, 1617 and the titular church of San Matteo in Merulana on April 3, 1617 . Roberto Ubaldini moved to the titular church of Santa Pudenziana on July 3, 1617 , from January 1621 to May 22, 1623 he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Tridentine Council . He took part in the conclave of 1621 , which Pope Gregory XV. chose. On May 17, 1621 he moved to the titular church of Sant'Alessio and was legate in Bologna from May 22, 1623, which Pope Urban VIII confirmed in 1624. Roberto Ubaldini held this position until October 1627, when he fell out of favor with the Pope because he had supported Cardinal Gaspar Borja's protest against the Pope's pro-French and anti-Spain policies. He took part in the 1623 conclave , from which Urban VIII emerged as pope. Before October 2, 1623, he resigned from his episcopate in Montepulciano. From January 10, 1628 to January 8, 1629 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He again changed the titular seat to Santa Prassede on August 20, 1629.

He died in Rome and was buried there in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva .
