history

The diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza was established on November 10, 1561 by Pope Pius IV with the Apostolic Constitution Ecclesiarum utilitatem from cession of the diocese of Arezzo as the diocese of Montepulciano .

On 30 September 1986 the diocese of Montepulciano was by the Congregation for Bishops with the decree Instantibus votis the diocese of Chiusi-Pienza affiliated. The diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino as a suffragan .
