The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Florence ( lat. Archidioecesis Florentina , ital. Arcidiocesi di Firenze ) is one in Italy located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

The diocese was established in the 1st century, the first historically secure bishop is Felix , who at the beginning of the 4th century participated in a synod convened by the Roman bishop Miltiades . On 10 May 1419 the diocese was Pope Martin V. archbishopric with seat of a Metropolitan , the first archbishop was Amerigo Corsini (acting 1411-1434). In 1799 Florence and with it the archbishopric fell under French occupation. Since 1889, all Florentines were archbishops upon appointment Cardinal or were subsequently created cardinals so that Florence is considered traditionally connected to the dignity of Cardinal bishopric.

Mater Ecclesia is the cathedral of Florence (Santa Maria del Fiore) completed in 1436 .
