The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto ( lat. : Archidioecesis Barensis-Bituntina , ital. : Arcidiocesi di Bari-Bitonto ) is in Italy located Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Bari .

history

The diocese of Bari was founded in the 4th century. After the victory of the Byzantine general over the Ostrogoths in the battle of Mons Lactarius in 552, the diocese of Bari was subordinate to the Patriarch of Constantinople , who elevated it to an archbishopric in the 6th century . In 1071, after three years of siege , the Normans under Robert Guiskard conquered Bari, the last important Italian city still in the possession of Byzantium. From then on, the Archdiocese of Bari was again subordinate to the Pope.

On September 30, 1986, Pope John Paul II united it with the Bishopric of Bitonto to form the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto.
