The diocese of Lucera-Troia was established in the 4th century as the diocese of Lucera and subordinated to the archdiocese of Benevento as a suffragan . In 1391 the territory of the dissolved diocese of Fiorentino was annexed to the diocese of Lucera . In 1409 the territory of the dissolved diocese Tortiboli was annexed to the diocese of Lucera . In 1439 the territory of the dissolved diocese of Civitate was incorporated . The diocese of Lucera gave in 1478 parts of its territory to re-establish the diocese of Civitate. On June 27, 1818 the territory of the dissolved diocese Vulturara was incorporated into the diocese of Lucera .

The diocese of Lucera was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Foggia as a suffragan on April 30, 1979 . On September 30, 1986, the Diocese of Troy was attached to the Diocese of Lucera .
