The diocese was founded by Pope Benedict XIV on July 6, 1751 , when the Patriarchate of Aquileia was dissolved. Part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia became the Archdiocese of Gorizia , which was under Habsburg rule. The remaining area formed the Archdiocese of Udine under the influence of Venice . From 1818 to 1847 the diocese was suffragan to the Patriarch of Venice . Pope Pius IX On March 14, 1847, Udine raised again to the archbishopric and placed it directly under the Holy See . The patron saints of the diocese are the saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus . The archbishops of Udine enjoy the right to wear the legate purple , which is why the inside of the prelate's hat in their coat of arms is colored red.
