The Archbishopric of Genoa ( Latin : Archidioecesis Ianuensis , Italian : Arcidiocesi di Genova ) is a metropolitan bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy with its seat in the city of the same name, Genoa .
area
The archbishopric is located in the Liguria region and extends over the metropolitan city of Genoa and parts of the province of Alessandria .
history
The diocese was probably founded in the 3rd century and on March 20, 1133 by Pope Innocent II raised to the archbishopric.
On September 30, 1986, the Archdiocese of Genoa was united with the Diocese of Bobbio-San Colombano , which in 1980 had just under 18,000 inhabitants and only 17,000 Catholics, to form the Archdiocese of Genoa-Bobbio. The areas of the dissolved Diocese of Bobbio-San Colombano were ceded to the Diocese of Piacenza on December 16, 1989, which was renamed the Diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio . Since then, the archdiocese has been called the Archdiocese of Genoa again .
The archbishopric is one of the most important bishops in Italy. The Archbishops of Genoa are traditionally admitted to the College of Cardinals .
