The province of Alessandria is the south-easternmost and after Turin and Cuneo the third largest province in the Italian region of Piedmont . In the north it borders on the province of Vercelli and in the east on the province of Asti . It shares borders with the regions of Lombardy ( Province of Pavia ), Emilia-Romagna ( Province of Piacenza ) and Liguria ( Metropolitan City of Genoa and Province of Savona ).

geography

Two thirds of the province's territory is mountainous or hilly. To the north lies the hilly landscape of the Basso Monferrato, through which the Po and Tanaro rivers run. In the center is a fertile plain, which is crossed by the Tanaro, the Bormida and their tributaries. In the south-west lie the hills of Val Bormida, Val d'Erro and Val d'Orba, which are connected to the mountains of the Apennines ; in the southeast, the hilly area of the Novese and the Tortonese, together with the valleys of the Scrivia and its tributaries, form the foothills of the Ligurian Apennines, where the province borders the province of Genoa.

Agriculture

The wide plain in the interior of the province is mainly used for growing grain: wheat, corn, soy, sunflowers. The cultivation of sugar beet for industrial production is widespread. In the flat areas of Casalese, the landscape is characterized by extensive rice fields. The few flat areas of Novese are dedicated to the cultivation of grain and are characterized by mulberry plantations, which were introduced for silkworm breeding in the course of the 17th to 19th centuries. The hilly areas of Novese, Casalese, Acquese and Tortonese are used unrivaled for viticulture.

Industry, trade and craft

The main industrial centers are around Alessandria (Spinetta and Valenza), Tortona (Castelnuovo Scrivia and Pontecurone), Novi Ligure (Arquata Scrivia, Serravalle Scrivia, Cassano Spinola, Casale Monferrato). The main sectors of industry are metalworking and jewelry production (in Valenza). The food industry and chemistry follow.
