Gabiano (the ancient Gabianum ; Piedmontese Gabian ) is a place with 1052 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the province of Alessandria , Piedmont . The community with 17 km² is located at an altitude of around 300 m slm
Gabiano is located 50 northeast of Alessandria. The neighboring municipalities are Camino , Cerrina Monferrato , Fontanetto Po ( VC ), Mombello Monferrato , Moncestino , Palazzolo Vercellese ( VC ) and Villamiroglio .
history
The castle of Gabiano was given as a fief to the Marquis of Montferrat by Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa . Various families followed as borrowers, until 1622 Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga ceded them to the Genoese patrician Agostino Durazzo Pallavicini to settle debts , who also assumed the title of Marchese di Gabiano . In the 18th century their fortification elements were removed, but reconstructed from 1907 and around 1930 the halls were commissioned by Matilde Durazzo Pallavicini, née. Princess Giustiniani repainted with medieval motifs. Today the castle and 260 hectares of estate (20 hectares of which are vineyards) belong to her nephew, the Marchese Giacomo Cattaneo Adorno.
Culinary specialties
The Gabiano wine is named after the municipality . Some of the vineyards in Gabiano belong to the DOC Rubino di Cantavenna . Gabiano also grows vines of the Barbera variety for the Barbera d'Asti , a red wine with DOCG status.
