history

Doria Castle in Mornese

First mentioned in documents from 1188 as Molanesio , it came under the rule of the Rossa della Volta from Genoa , who built a castle in 1270. From them the rule went to the Margraves of Montferrat and finally from 1330 to 1574 to the Counts of Doria . The castle structure that is preserved today dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Saint New Year's Church in Mornese

The parish church was first dedicated to Nicholas of Tolentino (1245–1305), then to St. New Years Eve . There is a nativity scene exhibition in the basement of the church . Both today's parish church and the church of St. Roch date from the 16th century.

The place is considered the spiritual center of the Don Bosco family , especially the Don Bosco sisters . It is the birthplace of the co-founder of what is now the largest women's order in the Roman Catholic Church, Maria Dominica Mazzarello . She spent her childhood and youth in the Valponasca farm. The sisters' first college was also established in Mornese. In 1972, for the 100th anniversary of the order, the Don Bosco sisters, with the help of former students from 57 nations, established a church with the patronage of St. Consecrated to Maria Dominica Mazzarello. A small church has stood nearby since the middle of the 19th century, dedicated to St. Lawrence and Mary, Help of Christians .
