Until 1313 the place was under the municipality of Tortona, then the Spinola took over the rule in the place, which were replaced by the Doria in 1596 . Until 1859 the place belonged to the province of Genoa and then came to the province of Alessandria. The name addition Scrivia has been part of the place name since 1892 in order to avoid the same name in the now unified Italy.
