Novi Ligure ( Ligurian Nêuve , Piedmontese Neuve ) is a town and a municipality with 28,255 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the Italian province of Alessandria (AL), Piedmont region .
The community consists of the districts Merella and Barbellotta. The neighboring municipalities are Basaluzzo , Bosco Marengo , Cassano Spinola , Gavi , Pasturana , Pozzolo Formigaro , Serravalle Scrivia and Tassarolo . The patron saint of the place is Madonna della neve .

history
The Republic of Genoa conquered Novi in 1529. After that, Novi remained under Genoese rule, with the exception of a brief Austro-Piedmontese occupation 1745–46. From 1797 to 1805 it was part of the Ligurian Republic . In the second coalition war against revolutionary France, Russian-Austrian troops under Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov defeated the French in the battle of Novi on August 25, 1799 . In 1805 Novi was annexed by the French Empire. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the city was added to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia together with the Genoese Republic .
