Sorbiers is a French town with 7933 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes southwest of Lyon . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and is part of the canton of Sorbiers . The inhabitants of the municipality call themselves Sorbéran (ne) s .

geography

Sorbiers is located about nine kilometers northeast of Saint-Étienne . The Onzon flows through the village and drains over the Furan to the Loire . Sorbiers is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Fontanès in the north, Saint-Christo-en-Jarez in the northeast, Saint-Chamon in the east, Saint-Jean-Bonnefonds and La Talaudière in the south, La Tour-en-Jarez in the west and Saint-Héand in the Northwest.

The municipality is located on the edge of the Pilat Regional Nature Park and is associated with it as an access point.
