L'Étrat is a French commune with 2,531 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and is part of the canton of Sorbiers . The inhabitants are called Chavanois (es) .

geography

L'Étrat is about four kilometers north of Saint-Étienne on the Furan River . L'Étrat is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Héand in the north, La Tour-en-Jarez in the east, Saint-Priest-en-Jarez in the south, Villars in the southwest and La Fouillouse in the west.

The former route nationale 498 (today's D1498) runs through the municipality .
