Saint-Genest-Malifaux is located about eight kilometers south-southeast of Saint-Étienne in the historic Forez landscape . The Semène and Ondaine rivers have their source here . Saint-Genest-Malifaux is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Planfoy in the north, Tarentaise in the northeast, La Versanne in the southeast, Saint-Régis-du-Coin in the southeast, Marlhes in the south and southwest, Jonzieux in the southwest, and Saint-Romain-les-Atheux in the west and north-west and La Ricamarie in the north-west.
The former national routes 82 and 501 run through the municipality .
