Saint-Héand is a French commune with 3,592 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Étienne and is part of the canton of Sorbiers (until 2015: the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Saint-Héand ). The inhabitants are called Héandais (es) .

geography

Saint-Héand is located about eight kilometers northwest of Saint-Étienne in the historic Forez landscape . Saint-Héand is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Aveizieux in the north, La Gimond in the northeast, Fontanes in the east and northeast, Sorbiers in the southeast, La Tour-en-Jarez and L'Étrat in the south, La Fouillouse in the southwest and Saint-Bonnet-les -Oules to the west and northwest.

history

The village has existed since the 10th century. According to legend, it was founded by St. Engendus (French: Saint Héand) through the foundation of a monastery, or by pilgrims who brought his relics here.
