Saint-Romain-les-Atheux is located about nine kilometers south of Saint-Étienne in the historic Forez landscape . The Cotatay flows in the northeast of the municipality . Saint-Romain-les-Atheux is surrounded by the neighboring communities of La Ricamarie in the north, Saint-Genest-Malifaux in the east, Jonzieux in the south, Saint-Just-Malmont in the west and south-west and Le Chambon-Feugerolles in the west and north-west.
