Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is a French municipality with 478 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez belongs to the Arrondissement of Roanne and the canton of Le Pilat (until 2015: canton of Rive-de-Gier ).
geography
Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is located about 20 kilometers east-northeast of Saint-Étienne on the Couzon River , a tributary of the Gier . Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Châteauneuf in the north, Longes in the east and north-east, Pavezin in the south and south-east, Pélusin in the south, Saint-Paul-en-Jarez in the south and west and Farnay in the west and north-west.
history
In 1280 a charterhouse was founded as a monastery on the mountain by Beatrix de la Tour du Pin. Carthusian monks lived here until it was dissolved in 1792 .
