The most beautiful villages in France
The most beautiful villages in France ( French Les plus beaux villages de France ) is a cultural tourism award in France .
The association was founded in 1982 by Charles Ceyrac, then mayor of Collonges-la-Rouge in Corrèze , to promote tourism in small rural communities with a rich historical heritage. With this aim, it awards French communities the label Les plus beaux villages de France . In the founding year, the mayors of 66 municipalities joined the initiative. Currently (as of 2014) there are 157 places in 21 French regions and 66 departments in the list.
In order to ensure quality, the association has imposed strict criteria on the selection of the villages. A place wishing to be included in the list of the most beautiful villages in France cannot have more than 2000 inhabitants and must have a protected zone or listed buildings.
Following the French model, similar initiatives arose in 1994 in Wallonia ( Les plus beaux villages de Wallonie ), in 1997 in Québec ( Les plus beaux villages du Québec ), in 2001 in Italy ( I borghi più belli d'Italia ) and 2015 in Switzerland ( The Most Beautiful Swiss Villages ). The international umbrella organization Les plus beaux villages de la Terre, based in Collonges-la-Rouge, has united the various national organizations since 2003 .
