Saint-Quirin (German Sankt Quirin ) is a French commune with 722 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

The place has been declared one of the most beautiful villages in France by the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France .

history

Saint-Quirin was first mentioned in a document in 966. The name goes back to the Roman name Quirinus , a Roman tribune. The Marmoutier Abbey owned a priory in Saint-Quirin in the Middle Ages , which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and partially rebuilt in the 18th century. A glass factory was established as early as the 15th century, primarily producing glasses for the Ducal Palace of Nancy . Until the French Revolution , the communities Métairies-Saint-Quirin and Vasperviller also belonged to Saint-Quirin. During the revolutionary years the city was temporarily called Cœur-Francs .

Relics from prehistoric times have been found in the vicinity of Saint-Quirin . At the nearby archaeological site of Croix Guillaume, relics from the Gallo-Roman era were discovered: a necropolis , sculptures , steles , clay pots and jewelry.

Churches

  • The baroque church of Saint-Quirin, rebuilt in 1722, is the former church of the priory: three onion domes , a unique nave and the special furnishings make it worth seeing. Altars and a choir stalls from the 18th century, which extends over three levels. It contains an organ by Johann Andreas Silbermann from 1746, which was restored in 1969.
  • The Sainte-Claire chapel was restored in 1818.
