Saint-Jean-de-Bassel (German Sankt Johann von Bassel , 1940-1944 Basseln ) is a French commune with 350 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ), about nine kilometers north-west of Sarrebourg .

history

In the 15th century the place was a seat of the Order of Malta , after whose patron saint it is named. There is a monastery of the Sisters of Divine Providence ( Sœurs de la Divine Providence ).

The place came to France in 1766, from 1871 to 1918 to the German Empire and from 1919 back to France.
