Dabo ( Vogesian , German Dagsburg , French formerly Dagsbourg / Dachsbourg ) is a French commune with 2522 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins and the canton of Phalsbourg .

geography

The municipality is located high in the north-western Vosges between Strasbourg and Sarrebourg . The districts of La Hoube , Hellert and Schaeferhof belong to Dabo .

history

In the Middle Ages , the area around Dabo belonged to Alsace as the county of Dagsburg . Well known is the community because of two buildings on the impressive Rocher du Dabo in more than 660  m are high: The ruins of Dabo and the chapel , the memory of Pope Leo IX. was built. He lived from 1002 to 1054 and was a second cousin of the Salian emperor Heinrich III. Leo's mother Heilwig came from the Dagsburg. Through them there were family ties to the owners of the younger Dagsburg in Alsace.
