Aulnois-sur-Seille is a French commune with 278 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins , to the canton of Le Saulnois and to the communal association Communauté de communes du Saulnois .

Aulnois-sur-Seille is located southeast of Metz in the Saulnois on the Seille , which flows into the Moselle near Metz . The place is at an altitude between 187 and 272 meters above sea level, the mean height is 200 meters. The municipal area covers 5.09 square kilometers.

history

782 the village when it was Alningas first mentioned in 1121 as Alnet , 1329 as ennoy and 1334 Anois .

From the 13th century there was a hospice of the Order of Malta in Aulnois-sur-Seille. The castle of Aulnois-sur-Seille belonged to the diocese of Metz in the 14th century, in the 15th century it belonged to the Oriocourt family and towards the end of the 16th century it came into the possession of the des Armoises family. Charles des Armoises had the castle rebuilt as a palace in the 18th century. Until Aulnois-sur-Seille became the seat of a margraviate itself in 1726 , it belonged to the margraviate of Pont-à-Mousson .

1793 received Aulnois-sur-Seille (as Aulnois ) in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and 1801 the right to local self-government. From 1801 to 1871 it belonged to the former Meurthe department , which was renamed the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in 1871 . In 1871 the community was incorporated into the newly created realm of Alsace-Lorraine of the German Empire due to changes in territory due to the course of the Franco-German War (1870–1871) . The realm of Alsace-Lorraine existed until the end of the First World War (1914–1918) and was then dissolved. At that time, Aulnois-sur-Seille was in the Château-Salins district . As a French-speaking village, Aulnois-sur-Seille was one of the last 247 municipalities whose name was Germanized on September 2, 1915. The name was changed to "Erlen" and was the official place name until 1918. In 1918 the community came back to the French department of Moselle.

During the Second World War, Aulnois-sur-Seille (Erlen / Westmark ) was reoccupied by the Germans.

The coat of arms of the municipality corresponds to the old coat of arms of the Oriocourt family. It is silver with a black central bar above which a red leopard lion strides.

Attractions

The former castle of Aulnois-sur-Seille was built around 1380 and converted into a castle in 1726. Today the castle is owned by an association and serves as a kindergarten and elementary school. It was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1963 .

The chapel of the Order of Malta is no longer in use, its square choir dates from the 15th century and has an opaion . The nave was built in 1692.
