Lagarde is a French commune with 190 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins .
geography
Lagarde is located on the Sânon and the parallel Rhine-Marne Canal , about 15 kilometers southeast of Vic-sur-Seille on the eastern edge of the Saulnois . The municipal area of 22.26 km² borders on the Meurthe-et-Moselle department to the west and south . The municipality is located in the Lorraine Regional Nature Park .
history
Lagarde originally belonged to the diocese of Metz , it was founded by the bishop Jean d'Apremont. A castle was later built here, which went to the lords of Zweibrücken-Bitsch as a fief . During the Thirty Years War , Lagarde was badly damaged during the occupation by Swedish troops in 1638.
Lagarde became known in Germany during the First World War through the battle near Lagarde . From 1915-18 and 1940-44 it had the Germanized name Gerden .

Culture and sights
Sights include the Nativité-de-Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Birth of John the Baptist) church from 1750 and a 12th century bell tower. There are also the remains of a castle from the 14th century.
There is a German and a French military cemetery for the fallen in the battle of 1914.
The municipality of Lagarde is part of the Lorraine National Park, which was founded on May 17, 1974.
