Bassing (German Bessingen ) is a French commune with 119 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins , to the canton of Le Saulnois and to the communal association Communauté de communes du Saulnois .

geography

Bassing is located in the Saulnois east of Metz at an altitude between 220 and 283 meters above sea level, the mean height is 240 meters. The municipal area covers 6.3 km² (630 hectares).

history

In 1257 the village was first mentioned in a document as "Bessingen". Around 1594, Bassing belonged to the Seigneurie of Marimont-lès-Bénestroff . from 1698 it belonged to the castellany of Dieuze . From the 17th century until the French Revolution (1789–1799) there was a convent of the Paulaner Order on site. From 1790 to 1801 Bassing was the capital of a canton in the Dieuze district, after which the canton was dissolved.

In 1793, in the course of the French Revolution, Bassing received the status of a community and in 1801 the right to local self-government. From 1801 to 1871 it belonged to the former Meurthe department , which was renamed the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in 1871 . In 1871 the community was incorporated into the newly created realm of Alsace-Lorraine of the German Empire due to changes in territory due to the course of the Franco-German War (1870–1871) . The realm of Alsace-Lorraine existed until the end of the First World War (1914–1918) and was then dissolved. At that time, Bassing was in the Moselle department, this change was retained in 1918 when Moselle was again assigned to France.

A golden lance lies over the gap.
