Walscheid is a French commune with 1536 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins .

geography

Walscheid is about eleven kilometers southeast of Sarrebourg in the Vosges at an altitude between 294 and 983 m above sea level; the mean height is 400 m. The municipality covers 38.35 km².

The districts of Walscheid are Eigenhal, Sitifort, Saint-Léon ( Leonsberg ), Netzenbach, Beimbach, Nonnenbourg ( Nonnenburg ) and Rothstein. With the exception of the district of Eigenhal to the west, the municipality is just on the German side of the former Franco-German language border .

history

The place was first mentioned in 880 as Walterescett . The village was German until 1661, then became part of France, became German again in 1871 and then French again in 1919. In the period from 1940 to 1944 it was again under German administration and then again under French administration.

The area belonged to the Counts of Dagsburg . On the Dürrenberg in today's district of Saint-Léon, they built their Dürrenstein Castle, in which Bruno von Egisheim, later Pope Leo IX, on June 21, 1002 . was born.
