history

Georg Johann I von Pfalz-Veldenz called for the founding of the city Pfalzburg in 1568 and received city rights from Emperor Maximilian on September 27, 1570 . The first settlers were Protestants from Lorraine. In addition to the patch, the previous settlement of Einarzhausen existed until 1680 . In 1583, Georg Johann pledged the new town with the Einarzhausen office to Duke Karl III. of Lorraine . The heavily indebted Georg Johann could no longer redeem the pledged town; so it fell to the Duchy of Lorraine after the repurchase period had expired on October 1, 1590 . With the Peace of Vincennes it came to France in 1661 and was fortified militarily from 1679 by the French builder Vauban .

During the Franco-Prussian War , the Vauban fortifications withstood the Prussian siege for four months before the city was conquered in December 1870 and incorporated into the German Empire in 1871 with the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine , where it remained until the end of the First World War in 1919 . The Pfalzburger Strasse (Bremen) and Pfalzburger Strasse (Berlin) are named after this conquest .

The fortifications were razed by the end of the 19th century. During the Second World War the city was attached to the German Gau Westmark and liberated by the 7th US Army on November 23, 1944 .

In 1953, the American armed forces built a military base near the city, the Base aérienne de Phalsbourg-Bourscheid , which passed to the French in 1966 after the withdrawal of the Americans and which today serves as the base for a combat helicopter unit of the French armed forces under the name Camp La Horie .

Culture

The Fête de Foie Gras (Feast of Goose Fatty Liver), a “culinary showcase” of the Lorraine and Alsace regions , was able to attract national attention from gourmets . It takes place every year on the second and third weekends during Advent. In the local culture hall, previously in an elegantly furnished large tent on the main square, regional suppliers present their products (meat and sausage products of all kinds, confectionery and pâtisserie, fine brandies, seafood, wines, champagne and crémant, etc.), which you can buy and also can be tasted on site. The festival was launched in 1996 by Georges Victor Schmitt, the patron of the Phalsbourger starred restaurant Au Soldat de l'An II (one Michelin star). The organizer is the Phalsbourg Tourist Office.

The annual Festival de Théâtre has been held in Phalsbourg since 1984 . On the Place d'Armes and in the surrounding streets of the old town, theater groups of various genres perform (dance theater, street theater, music theater, etc.) from the end of July to the beginning of August.

At the end of August each year, the farmers of Phalsbourg and the surrounding villages organize the Fête du Terroir . On a Sunday, rural and handicraft work is shown, along with nostalgic and modern agricultural implements as well as farm animals. The highlight of the festival is a parade through the city center with festively decorated floats and animal training.
