Vergaville (German until 1915 Widersdorf , since then Wirtsdorf ) is a French commune with 578 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ), a few kilometers northeast of Dieuze .

history

The village is known for the former Benedictine monastery Vergaville , which existed there in the Middle Ages. In the Thirty Years' War it was completely destroyed, was abandoned and rebuilt later. Since then it has been on the French side of the former German-French language border .

In 1915 the German administration renamed the place "Wirtsdorf", which was reversed in 1918.
