Arzviller ( German Arzweiler ) is a French commune with 535 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins and the canton of Phalsbourg .

The place is known for the Saint-Louis / Arzviller ship lift .

geography

Arzviller is located about nine kilometers east of Sarrebourg on the watershed between Saar and Zorn . The municipality is crossed by a 2310 m long tunnel of the Rhine-Marne Canal and the Paris-Strasbourg railway line .

history

The place belonged to France from 1661, then became German again through the Peace of Frankfurt in 1871 and French again after the First World War. The region was again under German administration during the Second World War.
