The Zorn is a river that has its source in the Vosges and, as the largest and last tributary, flows into the Moder before it flows into the Rhine . It rises in the municipality of Walscheid under the name Yellow Zorn (French: Zorn Jaune) and only takes the final name Zorn after the confluence with its right tributary, the White Zorn (French: Zorn Blanche) . It has a length of almost 97 kilometers and drains an area of 757 km². The French spelling Zorn first appeared in the 18th century . Before that, the river was called Sorn , which comes from the pre-celtic and is supposed to mean flowing . The upper course to Zabern is of great scenic beauty and also has a variety of architectural treasures.

geography

Headwaters

The source areas are lonely and unpopulated and only accessible to hikers or cyclists. They are located in the central Vosges in the Moselle department . The Yellow Zorn rises on the northern edge of the Grossmann at 830 meters, the White Zorn at 740 meters north of the Langwand . Both flow north through the state forest of Dabo and meet at the Enteneck.

course

Later the run is accompanied by the D98 road through the uninhabited valley. At the Henningerhof, at one of the lowest points in the Vosges, which are only about 13 km wide here, the river breaks a path sharply to the east through the mountain range. This is where the famous Arzviller lock staircase for the Rhine-Marne Canal was built, which has now been replaced by an inclined elevator . The Rhine-Marne Canal and the Strasbourg - Metz railway line use the narrow Zorn Valley to cross the Vosges at this favorable point. The first village on the course of the Zorn, Lützelburg , with its picturesque ruins is also in this section . After another approx. 11 km, Saverne at the exit to the Rhine valley follows, the largest city on the Zornlauf. At Steinbourg the southern Zinsel joins from the left , at Dettwiller the Mossel flows from the right . The next bigger place is Hochfelden . In the canton of Brumath , the Rhine-Marne Canal and the railway line bend to the south, while the Zorn flows further east, passing under the Autoroute de l'Est . For the last 6 km it flows north, parallel to the A 35 and joins the Moder from the right at Rohrwiller .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Zorns is 757.2 km² and consists of 55.75% agricultural area, 37.29% forest and 6.95% built-up areas.

Hydrology

At the confluence with the Moder, the mean flow rate (MQ) is 5.91 m³ / s; the catchment area here covers 757.2 km².

In Waltenheim-sur-Zorn , the average annual runoff of the Zorn was calculated over a period of 94 years (1916–2009) . The catchment area at this point corresponds to about 688 km², thus about 90.9% of the entire catchment area of the river.

The flow rate of the Zorn, with the annual average of 5.39 m³ / s, fluctuates quite strongly in the course of the year. The highest water levels are measured in the winter months from January to March. The flow rate reached its peak in February at 9.09 m³ / s. From April on, the discharge decreases month by month and reaches its lowest level in August with 2.65 m³ / s, after which it increases again from month to month.

The monthly mean runoff (MQ) of the Zorn in m³ / s, measured at the hydrological station Waltenheim-sur-Zorn.
