history
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 as part of the establishment of the départements as part of what was then the "Strasbourg district".
With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the canton was redesigned as part of what was then the arrondissement of Strasbourg.
From 1871 to 1919 there was no further subdivision of what was then the " District of Strasbourg (Land)".
On June 28, 1919, the canton became part of the new arrondissement of Strasbourg-Campagne.
On March 22nd, 2015, on the occasion of the dissolution of the Strasbourg-Campagne arrondissement, three parishes came to the Strasbourg arrondissement . All other parishes moved to the Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement. The municipality of Krautwiller was added to the canton of Brumath.

Until 2014 the canton bordered in the north on the cantons Haguenau and Bischwiller in the arrondissement Haguenau , in the east on Germany with the Ortenaukreis in the administrative district Freiburg ( Baden-Württemberg ), in the south on the city of Strasbourg in the arrondissement Strasbourg-Ville and the cantons Mundolsheim and Truchtersheim and in the west to the canton of Hochfelden .

The canton consists of 22 municipalities with a total of 53,226 inhabitants (as of 2017) on a total area of 213.60 km 2 :
Until the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons in March 2015, the canton Brumath included the 21 municipalities of Bernolsheim , Bietlenheim , Bilwisheim , Brumath , Donnenheim , Eckwersheim , Gambsheim , Geudertheim , Gries , Hœrdt , Kilstett , Krautwiller , Kriegsheim , Kurtzenhouse , La Wantzenau , Mittelschaeffolsheim , Mommenheim , Olwisheim , Rottelsheim , Vendenheim and Weyersheim . Its layout corresponded to an area of 198.49 km 2 . Before 2015 it had a different INSEE code than it does today, namely 6705.
